Brushing

Brush your teeth and the braces twice a day. You may want to use a special toothbrush called a Proxabrush that specifically designed for cleaning between braces. Be sure to remove the rubber bands prior to brushing, Brush your teeth for at least two minutes, focusing on the areas underneath the wires. Using your brush at a 45 - degree angle, brush the top and bottom of each wire.

Flossing

Thread the floss string and push it down under the wires between your brackets. Remember to floss each tooth, even the ones in the far back.

Cleaning between the brackets

Gently clean between the brackets (under the wires) with a wire brush to get all of the plaque off. You might be given chewable tablets that show you where the plaque is located. Use them after you have brushed and flossed to help locate any leftover plaque.

Rinsing

Use mouthwash to clean your mouth. Ensure the mouthwash indicates that it removes plaque.

Eating and Drinking with Braces

Be sure to only eat foods that require little to no chewing when you first get braces. Foods such as applesauce, mashed potatoes, yogurt, and soup are easy to consume. Be careful with eating hard foods such as raw carrots, apples, and hard candies as they can break the braces or the pieces of food can get caught behind the wire. Also try to avoid hard taco shells, ice, nuts, bagels, and chips unless they are in bite size pieces. Refrain from chewing on hard items such as pencils, ice, or fingernails as well. In addition, sticky foods such as caramel, peanut butter, taffy and gummy bears should be avoided while wearing braces as those food particles often get stuck in the braces and could even pull the wire off.

Minimize sugary foods

Foods and drinks such as cake, candy, ice cream, pie, and soda are harmful for your teeth as the bacteria that forms the plaque is attracted by the sugar. Make sure you brush and floss after you eat foods or drink beverages that have a high sugar content. You can also inquire about sugar-neutralizing toothpastes as well.

Avoid drinks and foods that might cause discoloration or stains

Try to avoid beverages such as coffee, tea, or fruit punch as these can cause discoloration on your teeth and braces.

Care for your lips

Your lips could be dry after you get your braces put on, even with lip balm. Always keep lip balm on hand and apply it frequently throughout the period you wear your braces.
